Survey shows addiction treatment centers at crossroads

Addiction treatment center executives see a higher volume of patients, but wonder if they can keep further increases. How your facility stack up against others as the treatment field braces for possible influx of patients because of the health care reform?

Addiction professional's 2010 treatment Center Survey, reported on in the November/December 2010 number, provides a current view of programs and business trends for 363 addiction treatment facilities. This year's response was three times that of the preliminary examination of the magazine in 2009, with 61% of these respondents facilities mainly serve a publicly funded treatment population.


While 55% of the respondents said that their patient census vis-a-vis total capacity increased in the past year, only 47% said that they expect that health care reform to generate further increases in the next three years. Treatment center leaders are worried about the possible disappearance of trusted sources for treatment, such as the Federal substance abuse block grant funding.


A survey participant described the addiction treatment Community as at a crossroads, the situation to the uncertainty that the field with the advent of managed care surrounded.


The reports of the survey on the core services offered on facilities, the characteristics of clients served, and the types of medication treatment integrated into typical programs. Only 4 in 10 respondents said that their addiction treatment center has an electronic health record (EHR) system, which many an essential ability in the era of health reform. Some indicated that financial support is essential for treatment centers effort to upgrade their technology.
