Grant program provides transition from addiction to recovery on a long-term basis in the Community

LITTLE ROCK, ark (KTHV)--Arkansas is one of the 30 States selected for a publicly funded subsidy for a recovery programme to help the transition inhabitants of addiction to recovery in the long term.

It affects hundreds of thousands of Arkansans each year and can affect the lives of everyone around them.

Addiction can be a lifelong struggle. But a special program is aimed at helping those in drug treatment-reintegration into communities like yours.

270,000 Arkansans had a diagnosable substance abuse disorder last year, but less than 6 percent were able to access to the treatment and recovery support services they needed. Thanks to access to recovery, but now they can.

"It's a great opportunity for someone who is struggling, that self-medicating are can and now that chance to make their lives right back-up," says former Arkansas National Guard Captain Tanya Phillips.

Phillips collaborated with DHS to give the access to recovery program for military personnel.

"Any service member struggling with an addiction that qualifies for the program," adds Phillips.

ATR plans to help patients almost 8000 Arkansas in the next four years--including service men and women.

"It's very discouraging for them. They come home expecting to be the hero and their life is turned upside down and so very often those who need extra help. So it's a way for us to give back to those who have served, "Phillips said.

Tthe idea for the ATR programme came from Arkansas the addiction treatment gap. A privately funded, three-year project with the goal of increasing resources for substance abuse treatment.

"I think most problems for getting drug treatment in Arkansas now is the fact that such limited financial resources for recovery. Part of that is thanks to not understand recovery and have expectations that are not very realistic, "says Dr. Rita Galloway.

Galloway works with Arkansas Cares, a family treatment program, which through ATR services to offer.

"It will pay for mental health, substance abuse treatment, pay" Galloway is added.

Something that Galloway feels is necessary for successful rehab.

"Customers have a choice in this system of where they want to go for treatment. And I think that is of crucial importance in terms of them buy into the treatment program. "

13 Arkansas provinces will be able to use to be treated and support services through community-based/faith-based organizations.

They are:

-Crawford
-Faulkner
-Garland
-Independence
-Jefferson
-Lonoke
-Pulaski
-Saline
-Sebastian
-Washington
-White

Each patient should a care coordinator to help them access to needed services.

Access to Recovery is a four-year competitive discretionary grant program funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for substance abuse treatment. It offers vouchers to customers for the purchase of substance clinical disorder treatment and recovery support services.

The program will serve persons of 18 years or older who are members of the Arkansas National Guard or are returning combat veterans since 11 September 2001; persons with multiple DWI offenses, pregnant women and adults in families with (or risk) involvement with Arkansas DHS child welfare divisions of children and family services (DCFS) or Youth Services (DYS).

The University of Arkansas for medical sciences (UAMS) Partners for inclusive communities will work with DHS and community providers in programme implementation and management.
