Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned on Friday against illegal and powerful methods for the treatment of drug addiction in Russia.
"In the end, the decision must be taken by the drug addict or his family members," Medvedev said during a live TV interview when asked if he favored strong treatment of drug addiction.
The issue came to the fore in the autumn when Yegor Bychkov, the Director of an anti-narcotics clinic in the Urals, was sentenced to three years in prison for using "powerful methods" when dealing with his patients, including restraining them to their bed.
The Court later repealed the prison term for Bychkov in favor of a suspended sentence.
Most drug addicts slip back into dependency after undergoing treatment in Russian clinics, according to the statistics. About 30,000 Russians are annually die from drug abuse.
